1. Licensure & Education

Generally acupuncturists will list their credentials and education on their website. You can check out the school’s website to get an idea of their skill level.

There are many different programs.

It can range from a weekend seminar to a 4 year Master’s program.

If you want to check their license status, you can usually find the info at the state board’s web site.

If you’re looking for lasting results from someone trained to address the root cause of your issues, then a licensed Traditional Chinese Medical Practitioner is the way to go.

They receive a 4 year Masters Degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, that requires intensive study in acupuncture, herbal medicine, Eastern nutrition, body work and western biomedicine, and generally around 1000 supervised clinic hours. They also have to take needling technique and safety courses.

TCM does not depend on lab work, or a Western clinical diagnosis, instead using a 5000 year old system to lock in on your particular imbalances to create a customized treatment plan.

2. Atmosphere

Are you more comfortable in a spa-like setting, or a medical office? Do you prefer quiet or a more lively, and active space? Would you like a private room or  would you rather be treated in a group setting?

These are all things to consider before booking. Do you need mobility or other accommodations? You can get a good sense of most of these things from social media and websites, but some clinics will offer a consultation to address your questions.

3. Specialty & Continuing Education

Some practitioners specialize, some run a general practice. Most acupuncturists take lots of continuing education to stay sharp and improve their skill level. Since there is such a huge range in education levels of acupuncturists, not everyone will have the same experience. Some are trained to only treat basic pain, some did not study herbal medicine, etc etc

4. Communication style

Everyone has different needs and expectations. Some people prefer a practitioner who will explain how Chinese Medicine works, while others would rather not interact or ask questions. It’s important that you feel comfortable during your session

5. Treatment Style

There are dozens of styles. Every Asian country has their own style, and there are also lots of different philosophies and styles. Some needling styles are gentle and painless with no needle manipulation, some are more aggressive.

5. Location/Hours/Scheduling

Most conditions are going to require at least 5-10 sessions, so you may want to consider how far you are willing to drive, and whether the office has hours that work for your schedule. Do you need online scheduling or do you prefer to speak to a receptionist? Do you want contactless options or Apple Pay?

Her needling style is gentle but her treatments are powerful. She addresses not your current symptoms, but also the underlying emotional and physical root. She explains your issues in clear, easy to understand language. Traditional Asian Herbalism uses time tested formulas and treatment protocols. Generally they use only 1-3 formulas at a time, and usually for only 4-12 weeks for most conditions. She started learning herbal medicine at age 16, and believes if you are diagnosed correctly, you don’t need to take tons of supplements long term. In fact, to do so, may even be harmful.
