In Traditional Chinese Medicine, each season is controlled by a specific element. The Fire (Heart) elements is most active in the summer. I’m sure you’re already aware that seasons and weather impact your mood and emotional states.

Think of your Heart/Fire Element as a bonfire. We’re attracted to the bright warmth and feel both energized and relaxed. We speak easily, connect, laugh and enjoy our friends.

Now imagine that fire going out and the embers cooling. The party disperses because we’re feeling sleepy, bored, and “peopled out”.

This is how we feel when our fire element becomes depleted. When the fire element fades, and can’t ignite the heart, you can feel flat, distracted, unmotivated, lonely , anxious or filled with dread. You may have difficulty concentrating, remembering and enforcing boundaries.

Now picture that bonfire blazing out of control. The flames burn too hot and can’t be contained.

If you have excess fire in your heart, you may talk too much or too loudly, overheat easily, and feel out of control and have difficulty connecting with others and communicating your feelings. You may feel you’re expressing yourself clearly, but others can’t seem to grasp what your’e trying to say. You may also have difficulty grasping what others are trying to communicate.

Fire Element in Balance

  • healthy boundaries
  • communicates feelings clearly
  • laughs easily and feels joy
  • trusts appropriately
  • enthusiastic
  • has good circulation
  • focused, good reading comprehension
  • gives and receives love

Fire Element Out of Balance

  • agitation, anxiety, loneliness
  • feeling exhausted by other people
  • palpitations
  • poor circulation, aches & pains
  • addictive, controlling or unwanted behavior
  • insomnia or restless sleep
  • hot flashes or trouble regulating temperature

How to balance the fire element

  • Eat watery, summer produce like watermelon, cucumbers, cherries, berries, tomatoes, rhubarb and grapes
  • Avoid too much ice cream or cold, raw food straight from the fridge, since it’s hard on your digestion
  • Add warming herbs and spices for hearth health & to balance cold food- Tajin (chili, lime & salt) goes great with most fruits. Add pepper, basil, rosemary, and thyme are delicious on summer salads, and surprising good on raw fruit or pies!

Remember, if it’s red, it will have special healing properties for your heart!

  • Get acupuncture and/or herbal prescriptions from a licensed Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner who is trained to do seasonal treatments and balance your emotional & physical systems
  • Drink mineral and electrolyte rich herbal teas like hibiscus, lemon balm and mint.
  • Take cool showers with rose or geranium soap.
  • Spray your face or heart acupressure points on your wrist with chilled rose or honeysuckle hydrosol
